Raising a family in Jersey should not come at the cost of careers, financial stability, or wellbeing. Yet for many parents, the reality is increasingly shaped by unaffordable or inaccessible childcare, high housing costs, limited early years support, and workplace cultures that have not fully adapted to modern family life.
At its core, Mentorhood is grounded in a simple principle: parents should have genuine choice. Whether a parent intends to stay at home during their children’s most formative early years or needs to work to support their family, that decision should be shaped by preference and circumstance, not constrained by unaffordable childcare, inflexible employment structures or systemic gaps in support. Families deserve real options, not choices dictated by structural pressure.
Mentorhood exists to help create a fairer, more supportive system for families, one that recognises care as essential infrastructure and enables parents to participate in work, family life and community with confidence.
Through research, including collaboration and policy engagement with The Policy Centre, alongside case studies and advocacy, we highlight the lived experiences of families navigating childcare, employment and early years pressures in Jersey. By engaging constructively with government, employers and the wider community, our aim is to support informed, evidence-led progress in areas that directly affect workforce participation and family wellbeing.
Our focus includes:
Promoting affordable, flexible childcare from the earliest years
Supporting family-friendly workplaces with meaningful flexibility and returnship pathways
Encouraging cultural change that recognises caregiving as a foundational part of a functioning economy
Developing community-led support initiatives that strengthen resilience among parents
A core part of this work is the creation of practical, peer-based support through Mentorhood itself. This includes free workshops led by subject matter experts, a support group of like minded parents, and a regular, dedicated space where families can meet, share experiences and support one another. In doing so, Mentorhood seeks to help rebuild the “village” that many modern families lack, particularly in a high-cost, time constrained island context.
The intention is not only to advocate for long-term structural change, but also to provide immediate, community-based support that enables parents to remain engaged in work and family life without isolation or burnout.
Families should not be forced to choose between financial stability and being present in their children’s early years because of systemic barriers. A truly family supportive Jersey is one where care and career can coexist, and where parents are empowered with real, dignified choice.
